Stainless Essentials for Fishing
Why your fishing gear deserves better than rusty regrets
If you’ve spent more than ten minutes near saltwater with a tackle box in hand, you already know this: the ocean is not kind to anything made of inferior metal. It chews through mild steel faster than a pelican downs a pilchard. That’s why, at Bolt-In Co Sunshine Coast, we’re big believers in arming fishos with nothing less than marine-grade stainless steel fasteners — the sort of gear that stands up to salt, spray, and sunshine without a whimper.
Whether you’re running a serious offshore rig or just kitting out a tinny for weekend sessions, your boat hardware and fishing setup should never be the weak link. Let’s have a proper look at the stainless essentials you actually need.
Stainless Steel Fasteners: Your First Line of Defence
Every part of your boat that’s bolted, clamped, or secured is only as reliable as the fastener holding it. And unless you like surprises on the water (we don’t), you want those fasteners to last. That means SS316 — marine-grade stainless steel, resistant to corrosion and capable of withstanding constant exposure to saltwater.
At Bolt-In Co, we’ve got a serious range of stainless steel nuts and bolts – hex heads, socket caps, washers, nylocs – you name it, we stock it. And if you're chasing something specific, odds are we can get it quicker than your mate lands a flathead in peak season.
Not all stainless is created equal, either. Plenty of operators out there sell so-called “stainless” fasteners that couldn’t handle a splash from a garden hose, let alone a swell off Mooloolaba. That’s the difference at our shop in Maroochydore — we only sell quality fasteners Sunshine Coast fishos can trust.
Bimini, Rod Holders, and the Bits That Cop a Beating
Fishing gear cops more abuse than a busted sand anchor. The stuff above deck — your bimini frame, rod holders, bait boards, hinges, cleats — needs to be tough enough to take a hammering, and then some. Stainless is the only way to go, especially SS316 or Grade 304 at the very least, depending on the application.
We often get customers asking if it’s worth the extra coin to go stainless on these parts. The answer’s simple: how many times do you want to replace them? Aluminium corrodes, chrome flakes, plastic cracks. Stainless just keeps on keeping on. Especially if you give it a rinse now and then – yes, that’s a hint.
If you’re re-rigging your setup or building from scratch, swing by the shop. We’re happy to give you the lowdown on what’s best for your boat and how to install it properly (and yes, we’ll explain what a nylock is — again).
Trailer Hardware: The Forgotten Frontier
You’d be surprised how many folks meticulously outfit their boat in stainless, only to tow it home on a trailer held together by rust and crossed fingers. If you launch at the boat ramp regularly, your trailer fasteners are getting dunked in saltwater too — and they're doing it without a lifejacket.
Grade 12.9 bolts might be overkill in most fishing applications, but on trailers and winches, where load strength matters as much as corrosion resistance, they can make a lot of sense — especially paired with the right stainless fittings. U-bolts, axle brackets, leaf spring hangers — all of it should be stainless, or you’ll be on the side of the road with a busted bracket and a long wait for the RACQ.
We stock the stuff you won’t find at your average big-box hardware store. And if you’re not sure what you need, bring us a photo, a dodgy sample, or just the problem — we’ve seen it before.
Stainless Now, Thank Yourself Later
Fishing’s meant to be about tight lines and tall tales — not seized bolts and flaky hardware. Investing in marine grade fasteners might not be as exciting as buying a new lure or reel, but it’ll save you time, hassle, and maybe even a ruined trip down the track.
At Bolt-In Co Sunshine Coast, we’re not here to sell you stuff you don’t need. We’re here to make sure what you do buy actually lasts. From stainless steel nuts and bolts to the little washers that hold it all together, we’ve got the gear, the knowledge, and the dry sense of humour to get your rig sorted.
